XHTML colour names and their sRGB values

A colour value may either be a hexadecimal number (prefixed by a hash mark) or one of the following sixteen colour names. The colour values "#800080" and "Purple" both refer to the colour purple. The colour names are case-insensitive.

Black #000000   Silver #C0C0C0
Gray #808080   White #FFFFFF
Navy #000080   Blue #0000FF
Teal #008080   Aqua #00FFFF
Green #008000   Lime #00FF00
Olive #808000   Yellow #FFFF00
Maroon #800000   Red #FF0000
Purple #800080   Fuchsia #FF00FF

JavaScript Reference colour values

Popular browsers try to support all 216 (6×6×6) combinations of the 6 values 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF. The following table shows colour names and corresponding values for some colours supported by the X Window System and Netscape.

OS/2 Netscape 2.02 and 4.61 insist on an e in "lightgrey" and otherwise on an a as in "gray". The name "Aliceblue" shown for "#F0F8FF" in Netscape's JavaScript Reference does not work with OS/2 Netscape 2.02 (obviously a bug, see binary). The effects in your browser are shown below. It's interesting to view this page with a monochrome (grayscale) filter - at least it convinced me that white on red might be much better than black on red.

O'Reilly HTML and XHTML Appendix G

Appendix G of HTML & XHTML (4th ed. 2000, O'Reilly) mentions five additional colour names "Lightgoldenrod", "Lightslateblue", "Lightgray", "Navyblue", and "Violetred". Appendix G does not list "Crimson" and "Indigo", but maybe this belongs to the errata.

OS/2 Netscape 2.02 and 4.61 show "Lightgoldenrod" and "Lightslateblue" as ordinary "Blue".   "Lightgray" is shown as a lighter variant of "Darkblue", maybe "#000099".   "Navyblue" is shown as something like "#A0B0E0" instead of "Navy".   "Violetred" appears as something between "Aqua" and "Skyblue".

Many colours may have variants like "Blue1", "Blue2", "Blue3", and "Blue4", where "Blue1" and "Blue" are equivalent. Netscape does not support the X11-scheme, the variants of blue are actually shown as one red colour.

There may be also 100 variants of grey from "Gray1" upto "Gray100", where "Gray75" and "Gray" should be equivalent. With Netscape you'll see only some greenish colours or black instead of the lightest "Gray100" variant. The effect is different but still wrong for "Grey1" upto "Grey99", see below.
